Hospital Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) announced the voluntary recall of the drug for use in the treatment of a rare disorder called “fluid retention”, as well as for the use of a generic version of the drug, a combination of two drugs, for a maximum of three months. The MHRA is advising patients to stop the drug for several months and to seek medical advice if they develop signs of an allergic reaction to the medicine.
The manufacturer of the drug, Sanofi Aventis Ltd, is voluntarily recalling the two generic drugs which are used to treat fluid retention, on the NHS including the Augmentin and Ciloxan.
The drug, which was originally developed by Pfizer Inc, is sold under the brand name Augmentin, which is produced by Bayer Pharmaceuticals Limited. The two products were tested in clinical trials at the MHRA’s New Zealand laboratory and have been compared to the brand name of Novartis.
The product was found to be effective and the MHRA says that it has not affected the quality of the Augmentin drug. However, the products will be sold exclusively for the period of the product’s expiry date, meaning that there is a possibility that a generic drug will be sold on the NHS for a different price.
The MHRA says that it has received reports of adverse events related to the use of the Augmentin drug, which may have resulted from the manufacturing of the Augmentin drug.
In a statement, the MHRA said that:
“It is important that patients who have had side effects from the use of Augmentin be informed of any potential risks associated with this drug, as well as the importance of consulting with their doctor prior to using this drug,” the statement said.
“AstraZeneca is not currently offering any treatment for Augmentin to the NHS, as there is no indication that they are on the NHS.”
The product will be recalled on the UK market, and its manufacturer, Sanofi Aventis, is recalling the product, which is manufactured by a pharmaceutical company, Novartis.
